Abstract
A calf thymus extracts (Leucotrofina¢ç), rich in active polypeptides stimulates the maturation of bone marrow cells and the increase of leukocytes into circulation in patients with., induced leukopenia. It also affects phagocytosis and immunopoiesis.
The authors studied the effects of Leucotrofina¢ç on the number of leukocytes in 20 patients among the 49 patients who received anticancer chemotherapy with 5-fluorouracil and mito-mycin-C from January 1984 to December 1984 in the department of General Surgery in National Medical Center.
The results are as followings: 1) In the cases administered with anticancer drugs and. Leucotrofina? simultaneously, the incidence of leukopenia was less in Leucotrofina¢ç treated. group(16.2%) than in the ciptrol(46.8%). 2) The recovery period from the leukopenia was. more rapid in Leucotrofina¢ç group (6. 0 ¡¾ 2. 30 days) than in the control(8. 7¡¾5.14days). 3) The untoward effect of the Leucotrofina¢ç was minimal. We may suggest that the use of Leuco trofina¢ç with adjuvant chemotherapy in the stomach cancer can lower the incidence of leukopenia,- and that the recovery time from the leukopenia following the administration of anticancer drugs can be shortened by the use of Leucotrofina¢ç.
